Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith skilfully rewrites the past to suit the needs of the Party。 Yet he inwardly rebels against the totalitarian world he lives in, which demands absolute obedience and controls him through the all-seeing telescreens and the watchful eye of Big Brother, symbolic head of the Party。 In his longing for truth and liberty, Smith begins a secret love affair with a fellow-worker Julia, but soon discovers the true price of freedom is betrayal。

Mostly enjoyed it, not so much the creepy portrayal of women

Um 5 porque como é que é possível isto ter sido escrito em 1949。

This is an accurate description of why Propaganda and marketing works。 Why the human being longs after power or being controlled (by a higher power)。 It foreshadows terror policy and pseudo war。 It links to “smart” speakers as of echo devices with two way communication video/audio。 The former German Democratic Replublic and much more。 Well deserved classic。 Shall be reread。 Good further reading and listening: Neusprech Blog and podcast。

Well, well。 I’ve finally read the twentieth century classic, 1984。 Considering the hype, I’m underwhelmed。 Like others have said, 1984 makes a good essay but isn’t compelling in terms of plot or character development。 Winston and Julia’s relationship was completely contrived and the only reason I cared for this novel was due to its themes, and even the themes were often force-fed to the reader。I don’t regret reading this but I feel deceived by how highly rated this book is by seemingly everyone。 Well, well。 I’ve finally read the twentieth century classic, 1984。 Considering the hype, I’m underwhelmed。 Like others have said, 1984 makes a good essay but isn’t compelling in terms of plot or character development。 Winston and Julia’s relationship was completely contrived and the only reason I cared for this novel was due to its themes, and even the themes were often force-fed to the reader。I don’t regret reading this but I feel deceived by how highly rated this book is by seemingly everyone。 It doesn’t have the emotional punch you’d expect from a book about a tyrannical government that “vaporizes” people for their thoughts。 It was horrific and devastating but incredibly impersonal even as Winston went through torture after torture。As I see it, 1984 makes more of an interesting discussion than an interesting novel。 。。。more

George Orwell is my favorite author, and this book is the main reasonthe book tackles many issues from oppression, love, torture, and ignorance。this is currently my favorite book of all time。A very good plot and exceptional ending, would recommend it to anyone who likes dystopias and is new to the Orwellian concept。

Our future written in the pastAs certain parts of our government and destructive groups are attempting to push down our throats, this clarifies that this communist theme has been occurring for many years around the world。 It is built on hate, our beautiful America , was built that all men created equal。 We are FREE to speak, to live, to pursue happiness。 We,Americans, plan to stay that way, no matter what Evil comes our way。

I need to re read it。 Lol

Maybe I expected too much as everyone is always talking about this book, but I just found it incredibly dull。 For such sensational subject matter I struggled to keep reading。 Maybe that's what the new world will look like? Boring, dull and pointless? I don't think it could have lived up to the hype honestly。 Maybe I expected too much as everyone is always talking about this book, but I just found it incredibly dull。 For such sensational subject matter I struggled to keep reading。 Maybe that's what the new world will look like? Bueno, pues me sigue dando el mismo mal rollito que me embargo hace ya muchos años, cuando lo leí por primera vez。 Me confieso, sí, me confieso —oye, que no se entere nadie—, culpable de un montón de crimentales。

A miracle of literature! I don't know how I have waited this long to read it。 After finishing, I am left with the wish that I could memorise it word by word。 A miracle of literature! um crazy。 changed the way i think and very important to my political development tbh。 i know this is a classic and critically acclaimed and all so it’s no surprise it was good but still。 it was good。 it was interesting thinking about how life could be and it made my feel very philosophical。

Orwell is the king of "short story long"。 He makes incredibly insightful points, but then reiterates the exact same thing for 30 more pages。 Fantastic essay material, not great novel material。 Orwell is the king of "short story long"。 He makes incredibly insightful points, but then reiterates the exact same thing for 30 more pages。 Fantastic essay material, not great novel material。 。。。more

This book has such an important message and it is somewhat prophetic to many countries and how their governments function nowadays。 It is deep and philosophical。It is also boring。 It disguises itself (quite poorly) as a fictional story when most of the time it’s just a lecture。 It is also VERY repetitive which makes reading it a tiring task。I wish I could say I loved this book, but I’ll settle for respecting it and absorbing the message it expresses。

A really very impactful writing with great plot。 Also, an amazing use of metaphors in ir。 The end was not what we wanted, it was what needs to happen。 This book is not suitable for beginners as it has some twisted language。

Ignorance is bliss。 The first half earned 5 stars, but after Winston read Goldfein’s book for seemingly ages, the storyline of Winston’s transformation felt too roundabout and strayed away from the natural progression of the novel。Some of the reviews on here that compare 1984 to our (American) current state of politics make me laugh, considering that this book may well be a 95% accurate representation of the current state of communist China。 Although since Chinese citizens probably wouldn’t feel Ignorance is bliss。 The first half earned 5 stars, but after Winston read Goldfein’s book for seemingly ages, the storyline of Winston’s transformation felt too roundabout and strayed away from the natural progression of the novel。Some of the reviews on here that compare 1984 to our (American) current state of politics make me laugh, considering that this book may well be a 95% accurate representation of the current state of communist China。 Although since Chinese citizens probably wouldn’t feel that way, maybe the fact that I don’t think 1984 applies to modern day America means I’ve already been indoctrinated。 I love big brother。 (Gun shot)。 。。。more
